Buffalo Sewer Authority, U.S.
Setting the standard for digital innovation

Buffalo Sewer Authority's digital transformation journey shows the power of combining innovative thinking with practical, proven solutions.

Struggling with its overcapacity sewer system, Buffalo Sewer Authority (BSA) deployed a network optimization system that automatically redirects excess rainwater to underused parts of its network, preventing combined sewer overflows (CSOs).

The utility has reduced CSO volumes by 450 million gallons a year.

By dynamically managing sewer capacity, BSA has optimized its network to manage each unique weather event. Maximizing the efficiency of its existing infrastructure also enabled the utility to save millions in capital expenditures.

The smart sewer system has saved BSA and its community $145 million USD.

“We have shown this technology is effective and want to ensure that Buffalo remains prepared for the changing climate and the more intense storms coming our way,” - Oluwole A. (OJ) McFoy, General Manager at Buffalo Sewer Authority.

The success of this project has led BSA to expand its digital deployments. BSA is looking to install smart sewer technology at 16 additional sites across the city to advance the city's environmental, economic, and water equity goals for greater community resilience.

Turn Insight into Action:

Aging water infrastructure and the impacts of climate change mean utilities must be innovative to solve critical challenges. Buffalo Sewer Authority is thinking ahead by taking a systematic approach to build on previous successes and deliver sustainable results.
