Advanced pumps and services optimize wastewater management for Portugal Cove-St. Phillips

The picturesque coastal community of Portugal Cove-St. Philips (PCSP) in Newfoundland, Canada, faced a major challenge with its wastewater systems. Constant pump clogs led to daily downtimes, emergency callouts and expensive repairs. With limited aftermarket support for their existing equipment, and tight budget constraints, the town needed a cost-effective, reliable solution.

Xylem worked closely with PCSP to understand its unique challenges and develop a tailored solution. In collaboration with a local machine shop, service technicians developed a custom sliding bracket, which allowed Flygt N-3000 series pumps to integrate seamlessly with the existing discharge connections, keeping the project within budget.

The impact of Flygt’s clog-resistant technology was immediate.

Before the switch, PCSP was dealing with daily callouts due to clogging and pump failures. Since installing the Flygt N pump the utility has completely eliminated reactive callouts, saving the town time and money, while also increasing system reliability.

In addition to developing a custom pumping solution, Xylem provides ongoing support. A proactive maintenance agreement (PMA) ensures optimal pump performance and helps prevent issues before they arise.

For example, during a routine inspection, Xylem technicians identified hydraulic damage caused by rocks entering the wet well during local sewer construction. Thanks to this early detection, repairs were finished before a complete failure occurred.

On another occasion, moisture was detected in a pump’s oil, signaling a potential seal issue. Proactively addressing the problem prevented a breakdown, and Xylem’s rental pumps ensured uninterrupted operation while repairs were completed. With Xylem’s Flygt solutions in place, the utility has less clogging, less downtime and fewer visits to the lift stations.

“Flygt’s reliability is far superior to any other product I’ve dealt with,” says B.J. Hibbs, PCSP Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator. He notes that the pumps, backed by Xylem services experts, have become a long-term cost-saver.
