Global Omnium turns smart meter data into actionable insights with Xylem Vue powered by GoAigua
Global Omnium supplies water to 400 Spanish towns and cities, serving over five million people, and manages one of the largest smart meter networks in Europe. To collect and process smart meter data, the utility developed a unique software and analytics platform, now part of Xylem Vue powered by GoAigua. Discover how the utility uses the platform to improve operations and offer new services.
In 2008, Global Omnium recognized the need for digital transformation to create a more cost-effective and efficient meter-reading process. In the first stage of its transformation, the utility added walk-by meters with proximity wireless communications. Then came drive-by meters, which accelerated the reading process, but required highly optimized driving routes.
In the final stage, Global Omnium deployed smart meters with IoT capabilities, capable of directly sharing data with the utility’s databases. The utility, which now manages over 700,000 smart meters, strategically chose meter suppliers with open-source, non-proprietary data exchange protocols. New ways to collect data from meters, however, was only one aspect of Global Omnium’s digital transformation.
Integrating meter data on one platform
With its upgrade to smart meters, Global Omnium needed a platform to log, restructure and store consumer data, and convert it into business intelligence. The utility decided to develop its own software and analytics platform, GoAigua, to achieve this.
The successful platform is now provided by Idrica, which partnered with Xylem to combine Idrica’s proven technology with Xylem’s collaborative and consultative global water expertise and solutions. Xylem Vue powered by GoAigua includes Xylem’s portfolio of digital solutions for water utilities and is data-agnostic. The platform enables water and wastewater utilities to connect and manage their digital assets and streamline operations in a simple, secure and holistic view.
“Data means nothing if it cannot be turned into information,” says Jaime Barba Sevillano, the CEO of Idrica and Chief Disruptive and Digital Officer at Global Omnium.
“And it is this fundamental distinction between raw consumer data, which is collected by smart meters and stored in Global Omnium’s databases, and information, i.e., what the company actually uses that data for, that is at the core of its digital transformation drive.”
Designing new solutions using consumption data
With the platform, Global Omnium can integrate historical and real-time consumption data for each customer in a single point. This enables the utility to implement cutting-edge solutions, including:
- A machine-learning algorithm for demand forecasting
- An internal leak detection system
- An alarm system to detect unusual consumption patterns.
Global Omnium’s innovations have not only saved water but also reduced customer complaints by up to 60%.
The utility's digital transformation has positioned it as a leader in the European water sector, helping it win public tenders and gain customer trust. Global Omnium's success showcases the transformative power of smart meters when integrated with advanced data analytics, and how actionable insights from data can drive innovation and efficiency in the water industry.
