Payback Calculator

Significant opportunities exist to reduce the energy consumption of a pumping system by reducing the pump rotational speed. Fortunately, the HYDROVAR variable speed drive is designed to do just that. But don’t take our word for it. Let our Payback Calculator show you the energy and money that you’ll save by installing HYDROVAR on your pumping system.

Required inputs include nameplate pump performance, efficiency, motor load, annual operating hours, pump system type, and cost of electricity. Using these inputs and the duty cycle, you can calculate your current energy use, your potential energy use with HYDROVAR, and the substantial costs you can save.

Step 1: Select “Pump Calculator”

Step 2: Within the “System Overview” tab:

  • Select “Liquid” – “Water” (Units of measure can be adjusted by selecting units (kg/m3))
  • Select “System Type” – “Liquid Circulating System”

Step 3: Add the pump performance, motor data and hydraulic duty point required; once these data are input, a system curve and pump curve will be created

Note: Static head of the system depends on the system design; if this information is unknown, 30% of pump total design head (TDH) may be used

Step 4: Define the load profile

  • Select “Load Profile” tab
  • Within the “Load Profile” tab – Define the operation’s hours in use per year; this demand rate can be adjusted for a specific application
  • Adjust the load profile – Usually the flow rate demand will fluctuate when using a variable speed drive; the load profile can be adjusted by using the slider bars or by inputting data into the “Time %” column

Step 5: Select relative energy use – throttle valve vs. HYDROVAR

  • Select “Throttling, Drive and Savings”
  • The load profile is shown within the bar graph on the secondary axis; the throttling curve will follow the load profile
  • The “Throttle” and “Drive” line curves show the energy demand in kW as flow demand requirements vary; the “Savings” line curve graphically shows the energy savings at varying flow rates

Step 6: Select relative energy use – throttle valve vs. HYDROVAR

  • Input installation costs and component costs for both the drive system and throttle control; ignore on-off control inputs and results, which are irrelevant to this demonstration
  • Input your energy price
  • The Payback Calculator will show how HYDROVAR will produce substantial savings over a throttling control valve

Step 7: Save the report and/or create a PDF file

  • Select “File,” then “Save As” – Choose an appropriate file name; the report can be edited at later date, if needed
  • Select “File,” then “Export” (to PDF) – A PDF file will be created, which you can include in a project submittal for a customer
