After water has served its many uses, it needs to be collected, transported, treated and returned to the environment. Stormwater can be difficult to transport and manage, with large amounts of organic solids, rags and other stringy materials that often clog pumping systems.
Xylem provides a range of pumping solutions to move wastewater through the collection network and into a wastewater treatment plant. Additionally, we transport and manage municipal, commercial and industrial storm runoff through collection systems.
During periods of heavy rain, sewage systems and treatment plants sometimes can’t handle the large volumes of wastewater they receive. On the other hand, dry weather conditions generally bring an overcapacity. Installation of retention basins in a sewage collection system evens out the flow in the system over time. The retention basins make it possible to avoid or minimize problems such as flooding, overflow or poor treatment by storing wastewater until the treatment capacity is available. The treatment processes become more efficient and easier to control when flows fluctuate less.
You can add retention basins either as several smaller, geographically dispersed basins or as a few large basins, normally close to the treatment plant. What you chose depends on where in the sewage system you have the bottlenecks and where this retention basins can be built.
