Answers to Frequently Seen BIB Challenges

Answers to Frequently Seen BIB Challenges

Regular maintenance of your bag-in-box (BIB) beverage dispense system can reduce lifetime costs by keeping equipment running trouble-free, however, problems do occasionally occur. Most problems present themselves through beverages that taste “off” from how they are normally expected to taste. The underlying causes can range from an empty BIB container to dirty filter, a change in water supply characteristics, changes in ratio of water to syrup through the dispense valve or an installation / connection problem with the pump. Following are some of the most common issues owners and operators may encounter with solutions on how to mitigate those problems and keep customers satisfied.

What do I do if the beverages I’m dispensing taste too weak or too sweet?

If your beverages taste too weak or too sweet you should:

  • Check the BIB container. It likely needs to be replaced.
  • Check the dispense valve for operation and verify the ratio of syrup to water meets the specification for the syrup.  If the ratio is not right for the syrup, correct the ratio by adjusting the valve.
  • Make sure your water pressure and syrup pressure entering the dispenser are above the minimums recommended by the valve manufacturer. Pressure that is too low will lead to an improper ratio of water and syrup. Note that low water pressure could be the result of a clog, in which case you’ll need to change the filter cartridge. Low syrup pressure could also mean dwindling CO2 gas supply, an empty BIB container or an improper regulator setting.  For anything related to CO2 supply and regulator pressure setting, use a qualified technician to address these issues.

What do I do if only water is being dispensed?

If only water is being dispensed, be sure that:

  • Your syrup container is properly connected and not empty. It is advisable to remove and reinstall the threaded bag connector to assure proper engagement and seal.
  • The valves in the syrup system are open and are tight.
  • Electricity is getting through the valve solenoid when energized. If it’s not, be sure to repair or replace the dispense valve.

What do I do if my BIB pump does not supply enough syrup?

If your BIB pump is not supplying enough syrup, you should check the following:

  • Gas or air pressures supplied to the pump. Check that the gas or air pressure is correct and adjust any that are incorrect.
  • The number of beverage valves being served. Ensure that the number of valves currently being served are within the BIB pump manufacturer’s specs. If too many valves are being served, reduce the number of valves or consider upgrading to a pump that accommodate more valves.
  • Confirm that the tubing in the syrup system is sized properly for the line length. If the tubing is not sized properly, consider replacing the syrup tubing with larger diameter tubing.
  • Check the connection of bag connector to the BIB pump. We suggest removing and reinstalling the bag to assure proper connection. Be sure to clean the bag connector fitting threads of any excess / dried syrup with warm water to assure shut off valve operates properly.
  • Replace the BIB container, if empty.
  • Check the dispense valve for operation and verify the ratio of syrup to water meets the specification for the syrup. If ratio is not right for the syrup, correct the ratio by adjusting the valve.

What do I do if the rate of delivery is inconsistent with my BIB pump?

If the rate of delivery is inconsistent with your BIB pump it’s likely that there is air in the syrup delivery system. To resolve this, you’ll want to find and stop the leak.

  • The place to start looking for leaks is the vacuum side (between the BIB container and the pump). Remove the bag connector fitting from BIB container and clean it with warm water. Make sure the shut off valve in the bag connector fitting is clean and moves freely. Reinstall the bag assuring proper connection.
  • If the above does not solve the problem, check the clamps and fitting connections between the BIB container and the pump and repair as needed.
  • Confirm there is CO2 or compressed air available to drive the pump.
  • Check the length of the inlet tubing. The ideal length is 6 feet or less.

What can I do to keep my BIB pump from running constantly?

If your BIB pump is running constantly, you should inspect the following:

  • Syrup delivery system. There may be air in the syrup delivery system. Try bleeding the air from the system and re-clamp the hoses to stop drawing air into the system.
  • Pump discharge line. If syrup is leaking on the pump discharge line, then you’ll want to locate the leak and repair or replace the leaking component.
  • Clamps and fitting connections. Be sure to check that all clamps and fitting connections are tight and leak free.
  • The BIB bag. If there’s air or a hole in the BIB bag, then you’ll need to replace the bag.
  • The BIB connector. Be sure the BIB is connected properly and tightly. Most leaks are found here.
  • The pump itself. You may have a defective pump that needs to be replaced. However, be sure to check everything above before replacing the pump.

What do I do if my BIB pump is operating but doesn’t pump syrup?

If your BIB pump is operating but not pumping syrup, you’ll want to check the following:

  • The beverage dispensing valve. Be sure the valve is open to allow syrup to flow through the system.
  • The BIB pump itself. The pump may be air locked. To solve for that, make sure the pump is installed with the outlet port on the bottom.
  • The BIB container. Make sure there aren’t any holes in the BIB container. If there are, be sure to remove and replace the container.
  • The tubing from the BIB container. Confirm that the tubing from the BIB container to the pump isn’t kinked. If it is, be sure to repair the kink or replace the hose.
