How Buffalo, New York, is saving millions through smart sewers

Innovative utility builds resilience, while protecting bottom-line, through proven digital solution
 
The City of Buffalo, New York, faced a steep challenge. Due to its mid-20th century sewer design, the city was experiencing nearly two billion gallons of combined sewer overflow (CSO) annually, discharging into receiving waterways – and prompting regulators to step in.
 
Faced with a Long-Term Control Plan for CSO abatement that would have cost the City an estimated $525 million, Buffalo Sewer Authority (BSA) partnered with Xylem to find a better way.
 
The pioneering utility implemented a real-time decision support system that’s enabled them to maximize their existing infrastructure and create a smart, sustainable sewer system – while saving the utility and the community $145 million. Hear from BSA leaders how they did it:

Buffalo Sewer Authority is also garnering international acclaim. At the International Water Association’s 2022 World Water Congress and Exhibition in September, Buffalo’s wastewater network optimization project took home the gold in the IWA Project Innovation Awards, “Smart Systems and the Digital Water Economy” category.
