A watershed is the land area that drains into a given body of water. A drop of water that falls within a watershed always ends up in a particular waterbody such as a river, bay or ocean.
Watersheds supply the water bodies that provide habitat to wildlife, and that we use for drinking water, agriculture, manufacturing, recreation, and more.
Unhealthy watersheds blcok sewer systems and increase flooding, impact aquatic animal health, and pollute drinking water supplies.
- Trash
- Soil erosion & stream degradation
- Pesticides, herbicides & chemicals
- Run-off from non-permeable pavement
Healthy watersheds reduce floodcosts and damage, protect healthy ecosystems, and clean drinking water.
- Clean up litter & reduce plastic consumption
- Plant native & remove invasive species
- Clear storm drains of trash & debris
- Sign petitions & advocate
- Reduce fertilizer use - compost instead
- Educate others
