Xylem’s highlights from WEFTEC 2015
At WEFTEC 2015 in Chicago, Xylem recently presented its latest advanced technologies, including solutions for water reuse, wastewater pumping and analytics. Here are a few highlights from the event.
The Operations Challenge
For the second year in a row, Xylem sponsored the Operations Challenge Maintenance event at WEFTEC. In preparation for this competition, Xylem’s diesel-driven Godwin Dri-Prime NC80 pumps were provided to regional teams to practice on in the field throughout the year. The teams competed at WEFTEC, using the pumps to test their skills on the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment facilities, collection systems, and laboratories.

Advanced technology for water reuse
Xylem’s advanced technologies for water reuse were among the treatment solutions on display at WEFTEC. Xylem was recently awarded a $1.25 million contract to provide advanced treatment technology to the South Wastewater Treatment Plant in the city of McAllen, Texas. The plant provides 240 million gallons of reclaimed, treated wastewater annually to the McAllen Palm View Golf Course for irrigation purposes.
Xylem’s Wedeco Duron ultraviolet (UV) system – which was on display at WEFTEC – will be used to disinfect the treated effluent prior to reuse. Utilizing UV technology at the plant eliminates the need to store large quantities of potentially hazardous chlorine on site for wastewater disinfection in the city of 130,000 residents, and also reduces maintenance efforts for the operator.
Celebrating 100 years of Flygt
The iconic Flygt 3800 wastewater pump was also on display at Xylem’s booth at the event. Xylem also celebrated the production of the four millionth Flygt wastewater pump from its state-of-the-art facility in Emmaboda in southern Sweden. With a strong 100-year legacy, Flygt pumps today are operating in wastewater treatment plants in more than 100 countries around the world.
Showcasing analytics technologies
Xylem’s analytics brands including YSI, OI Analytical and MJK showcased specialist technologies in lab and field sampling, process monitoring, and regulatory compliance. Primary technologies that were featured included YSI IQ SensorNet, the premier monitoring and control solution for wastewater, the 9210p On-Line Total Organic Carbon (TOC) analyzer for drinking water, and the Flow Solution™ 3700, the latest addition to OI Analytical’s line of automated chemistry analyzers for lab applications.
Xylem presented its new YSI-branded ecommerce site, http://www.ysi.com, which features comprehensive ecommerce capabilities with an interactive, mobile-friendly interface.
Panel discussion on water infrastructure
Patrick Decker, Xylem’s President and CEO, also took part in the “Infrastructure Economics” panel discussion alongside other leaders from across the water sector. Water infrastructure is at the center of some of society’s most pressing challenges and the related economic impacts are extensive. The panel included a discussion about potential solutions, particularly regarding funding challenges, as well as the positive outcomes and economic benefits resulting from water infrastructure improvements.
