Water for United Kingdom
With Marine Conservation Society
Atlantic Coast Program Reforestation Project
In the last century, the UK has lost up to approximately 92% of its seagrass meadows which are home to many marine species and a key defender against coastal erosion and climate change. Although the UK has 377 Marine Protected Areas which contribute to over a third of UK seas, only 38 of the designated MPAs have bans to stop the use of bottom-towed gear across the whole site. This has had a devastating effect on local marine life and marine habitat.
Xylem is partnering with the Marine Conservation Society, a charity that drives political and social change by championing science-based solutions to protect oceans for future generations. Together, we will deliver targeted restoration to the shores of the UK’s Atlantic cost by restoring kelp forests, seagrass meadows, and reef habitats.
Xylem solution
- Restoring native oyster populations and protecting damaged seagrass meadows in Scotland
- Establishing new and restoring current reef ecosystems in Wales
Beneficiaries: Stored carbon and habitat creation will deliver benefits to local coastal communities
