A sewage treatment plant in Saudi Arabia is being expanded to help meet the country’s ambitious target for water reuse. An integrated wastewater treatment system from Xylem will help generate 200,000 cubic meters of treated water per day.
Water scarcity is a critical issue in Saudi Arabia, situated in the driest region in the world. To improve water supply and security, Saudi Arabia’s government plans by 2025 to reuse 100 percent of the wastewater produced in cities with 5,000 people or more.
Reuse for agriculture and irrigation
The system will be developed at the Manfouha sewage treatment plant in Riyadh, the largest city and capital of Saudi Arabia. It will be deployed in partnership with Al Muhaidib Contracting. Xylem’s Sanitaire ICEAS advanced sequencing batch reactor (SBR) will facilitate wastewater treatment at the plant, which will be reused for irrigation and agriculture in the region.
The treatment plant expansion began in early 2016 and is scheduled to be operational by the second quarter of 2018. When complete, it will help serve an anticipated increase in population. The plant will generate 200,000 cubic meters per day of average sewage flow for treatment and reuse.
Advanced water reuse technology
The treatment program developed for this plant includes Xylem’s products such as the Sanitaire ICEAS SBR and Flygt pumps.
