Xylem supports Land Based Recirculating Systems

Advanced wastewater treatment
New York, US: Albany County Sewer District’s South WWTP is one of the major treatment plants discharging into the Hudson River. Originally equipped with chlorine disinfection, the use of chlorine had been discontinued for many decades. The district required a state-of-the-art disinfection system that could quickly and efficiently respond to the rapid flow increases during storm events, and then could just as efficiently scale back as the flows subsided.
After considering several alternatives, the Albany County Sewer District selected a Wedeco Duron 60i2-2.5X4, with high power Ecoray 600W lamps, for their disinfection system. Inclined orientation and high power Ecoray lamps make for a small footprint, reducing construction costs eliminating 99.99% of pathogens – including bacteria, viruses and parasites. Sehore, India: Xylem was recently selected to supply advanced wastewater treatment technology to the first-ever sewage treatment plant in Sehore, India. The new plant is being developed to accommodate rapid industrial growth in the city of Sehore, located in the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India. Xylem technology at the new Sehore wastewater treatment plant, including a Sanitaire ICEAS advanced Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR) system, will help ensure cleaner rivers and better health for 100,000 people.
Zurich, Switzerland: Xylem has been awarded a contract to provide advanced treatment technology to the Werdhölzli wastewater treatment plant in Zurich. The upgrade will make the plant the largest ozone plant for the removal of micropollutants in the world.
Xylem’s ozone system will help the Zurich plant meet new regulations, since micropollutants cannot be removed with conventional wastewater treatment technologies. Xylem will supply eight Wedeco SMOevo ozone systems to the plant as part of a $51.17 million upgrade project.
Innovative solutions for water reuse
Saudi Arabia: A sewage treatment plant in Saudi Arabia is being expanded to help meet the country’s ambitious target for water reuse. An integrated wastewater treatment system from Xylem will help generate 200,000 cubic meters of treated water per day. The treatment program developed for this plant includes Xylem’s products such as the Sanitaire ICEAS SBR and Flygt pumps.
Florida, US: A county in Florida has become the first in the state to test direct potable reuse. Learn how the solution produces high-quality drinking water. Xylem’s Wedeco MiPro™ pilot plant, inside a portable trailer, is used for the UV/peroxide advanced oxidation process (AOP) to produce potable reclaimed water.
The treated water in the pilot process was tested for primary and secondary drinking water standards, as well as non-regulated microconstituents, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products. Water quality monitoring revealed that the water from the process met all drinking water standards for maximum contaminant levels set by the EPA and adopted by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
Pump stations and smarter, clog-free pumping
Louisiana, US: Utilities, Inc. of Louisiana (UIL) operates 192 sewage lift stations and 30 wastewater treatment plants in St. Tammany Parish. UIL recently trialed the Flygt Concertor pumping system, with integrated intelligence to lower energy consumption while preventing clogging.
Within a short period of time, significant energy savings of $1,000 per month were observed at the site due to reduced power consumption during off peak periods. The station also did not require any unscheduled maintenance or call outs during the trial period. A similar installation of the Flygt Concertor system in Sweden produced similar results.
Lushan, China: A devastating earthquake in 2013 in Lushan County injured nearly 12,000 people and collapsed many buildings. During the intensive reconstruction work, a Flygt TOP integrated pump station was selected to serve a scenic area for tourists in the ancient city of Han Jiang.
One advantage of an integrated pump station is that most of its structure is prefabricated, which shortens construction times and guarantees project quality. The pump station now delivers wastewater, collected from the ancient Han Jiang city and the surrounding area, through a pipeline buried under a river to a wastewater treatment plant five kilometers away. Emergency bypasses in record time
Tennessee, US: In the spring of 2016, an unprecedented 16 inches of rain fell on the city of Memphis, Tennessee. This influx of water eroded the soil supporting a sanitary sewer main that carries wastewater to one of the city’s central treatment plants. When the sewer main collapsed, the city immediately put their emergency response plan in action. Xylem delivered a turnkey sewage main bypass solution in just six days.
Ottawa, Canada: The Robert O. Pickard Environmental Center (ROPEC) is the wastewater
treatment plant for the city of Ottawa, Canada. The plant’s raw sewage pumping station has six dry-pit pumps with large 950-hp motors. In 2013, following a detailed condition assessment at the plant, the city learned that the condition of three of its six motors were outside acceptable limits, severely affecting their reliability.
The motor failure would dramatically reduce the station total pumping capacity, in the midst of high flow season: the spring melt. While the procurement of new motors started, the city needed additional temporary pumping capacity installed and operational before the high flow period. Xylem quickly set up a large bypass pumping system to allow the replacement of pump motors.
Smart networks and meter reading
California, US: Xylem’s Sensus brand, a global leader in smart meters, network technologies and advanced data analytics solutions, helps water, gas and electric utilities improve operational efficiency. Eastern Municipal Water District in Southern California, for example, deployed the Sensus FlexNet® communication network to improve operations and meet the needs of a growing population. The utility now relies on the FlexNet system to read meters remotely, a vast improvement over manual reads.
The utility can now also detect leaks sooner and better serve its growing customer base. The technology has improved the utility’s meter read accuracy and enabled them to alert 2,600 customers about potential leaks.
Tennessee, US: Nashville Metro Water Services Utility (MWS) has also improved meter reads with Sensus technology. MWS now collects meter data remotely and has reduced the cost per meter read by 95 cents, saving $181,000 per month. At the same time, MWS has improved working conditions for technicians, who no longer have to face the insects and other routine discomforts of manually reading meters in the field.
New Jersey, US: Sensus technology also helps customers in times of emergency. In October of 2012, two Sensus customers – the Township of Stafford and Seaside Heights, New Jersey – were hit hard by Superstorm Sandy. Randy Giberson, Water Superintendent in Stafford Township, used the Sensus FlexNet system following the storm to pinpoint leaks and determine where to send crews for repairs. Leak detection and prevention that extends asset life
Singapore: Visenti, acquired by Xylem in 2016, offers software and hardware solutions for smart water analytics, leak detection, and leak prevention. The company got its start in Singapore, which today has the largest smart water network in the world. Visenti’s products include: View, for data analytics; LeakView, to detect leaks in real time; and SurgeView, to protect assets and extend their life.
Singapore’s PUB water agency has hundreds of Visenti’s sensors deployed throughout its network. Through using Visenti’s solutions, Singapore has been able to reduce their non-revenue water so that it is just five percent of all water produced. Read more about Xylem’s solutions for non-revenue water.
