On November 21st 2020, Xylem partnered with Silabauz (www.silabuz.com), to sponsor Hack – Escolar, one of the largest innovation contests in Latin America. Due to COVID-19 the event was 100% virtual and students from across Latin America were challenged to demonstrate their digital talent, creativity and apply their coding knowledge to water issues that are affecting the Latam region today. These problems include education, water scarcity and pollution. Xylem were involved as mentors and judges, and held 3 master classes during the event for students to learn more. More than 250 registered for the event from across Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico and Colombia.
The Winner of the Water category, Jajaira Mallqui from Peru, designed an app for people to discover how much water is used in their daily activities, to raise the awareness about water availability. In actual fact, Jajaira told us that while she was working on her project, her house actually ran out of water that afternoon, this highlights the importance of such a precious resource.
